Angry Birds Star Wars review - Know Your Cell

We review the Angry Birds Star Wars game for iPhone, iPad and Android and we see if this marriage of two beloved franchises lives up to its name or if it's just a money-grab mashup.?

?

The Good?

I'm a big Rovio fan but I have to say that its latest game, Bad Piggies, left me cold. It just wasn't fun and I'm used to having fun playing Angry Birds games. I'm happy to report that Angry Birds Star Wars is really, really fun. Rovio takes all the great elements from Angry Birds Space, adds some new Star Wars-specific tweaks and creates its best game ever.?

Star Wars is also something that's near to my heart and when I first heard of this game, I was a bit concerned that it would hurt both brands. Fear not, as this cleverly uses the Star Wars universe to add fun sounds, images and game play features.?

For example, the standard red bird is being dressed up as the Luke Skywalker bird and this one eventually gets a light saber. That means you can launch the bird to destroy the Pig Empire's structures and then tap the screen again to use the light saber. And yes, you can use that light saber to defleft blaster rays (that's the geekiest sentence I've ever written).

It's a nice twist on traditional Angry Birds mechanics and it feels like it fits in well with Star Wars. There are just so many things which make me smile in this game: the pig Darth Vader laughing at you when you lose a round, the Chewbacca bird making that great growling sound and so many other examples.?

Rovio hits it out of the park with this one. The game play is great, the graphics look amazing (particularly the iPad HD version) and Star Wars fans won't feel like their favorite franchise is being cheapened.?

?

The Bad

I really love Angry Birds Star Wars, so it's tough to really find anything that's off with it. If you don't like either franchise, you're obviously not going to like it.?

On the Android free versions, you're going to have to put up with unsightly in-game ads which can detract from teh experience. Additionally, iPhone users?have been complaining about how expensive in-app upgrades are and how often you have to do them. It would also be nice to be able to sync between your iPhone and iPad, too.?

I can't fault Rovio too much for the monetization stuff because they're trying to run a business but I do fear that they could put off users if they don't find the right balance.?

?

The Final Take

Angry Birds Star Wars is a fantastic game that's worth every penny. It's a fun mix of two well-loved franchises and Rovio has done an excellent job of including what makes each franchise great. On the downside, some have complained about in-app upgrade prices.?

I highly recommend Angry Birds Star Wars.?

You can download Angry Birds Star Wars for the iPhone/iPod touch here (99 cents), for the iPad here ($2.99) and the free Android version can be found here.
