Quebec triple homicide suspect nabbed in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? A man wanted in connection with three deaths in northern Quebec has been captured after a police chase in Florida that involved sniffer dogs and a helicopter ? and left one officer with a broken nose.

Justin Bresaw, 35, was the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant and an alert by Interpol after a house fire last month in Amos, about 500 kilometres north of Montreal.

He is facing first-degree murder charges in relation to the two men and a woman found dead in the home.

After eluding police for more than two weeks, Bresaw was spotted in Tallahassee, Fla in the predawn hours on Sunday charging a laptop in an electrical outlet behind a church.

David Northway, a spokesman for Tallahassee police, said an officer on patrol asked Bresaw what he was doing outside so late.

"Of course, this is kind of suspicious since it's 1:30 in the morning," Northway said in an interview.

"Not too many people are sitting behind a church typing on a computer, so he (the officer) got out and started to talk to him."

Bresaw gave a false name at first, Northway said, and tried to flee the scene while the officer was entering his real name into a police database.

Bresaw resisted arrest and managed to escape after a scuffle, which left the officer with a gash on his face and a broken nose after he fell into a metal support beam, Northway said.

"It was quite the fight," said Northway. "Mr. Bresaw was able to get away from him and run."

Northway said sniffer dogs and a helicopter were used to track down Bresaw after he fled into a wooded area. He was found three hours later hiding underneath a house.

Bresaw was booked Sunday morning at a county jail in Florida and is facing charges there including resisting an officer with violence and battery on an officer.

In Quebec, he is wanted in connection with the deaths of Rene Deschatelets, Diane Duhaime and Jean-Guy Labelle.

Christine Coulombe, a spokeswoman for Quebec provincial police, said Sunday the extradition process is underway to bring him back to Canada. That process could be held up by the charges Bresaw now faces in Florida.

"We don't know how long it will take," Coulombe said.

Police had been on Bresaw's trail since last month.

On Sept. 20, three days after the fire, a stolen car allegedly driven by Bresaw was found in a wooded area near Havelock, Ont., northeast of Peterborough.

Nurses' assessment of hospital quality often on the button

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? A new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing affirms a straightforward premise: Nurses are accurate barometers of hospital quality.

Perceptions from nurses -- the healthcare providers most familiar with the patient experience -- about hospital quality of care closely matches the quality indicated by patient outcomes and other long-standing measurements.

"For a complete picture of hospital performance, data from nurses is essential," said lead author Matthew D. McHugh, a public health policy expert at Penn Nursing. "Their assessments of quality are built on more than an isolated encounter or single process -- they are developed over time through a series of interactions and direct observations of care."

Nurse-reported quality accurately correlated with outcome measures including death and life-threatening post-surgical complications, and patients' reports of the care experience, wrote Dr. McHugh.

This study, published online in Research in Nursing and Health, included more than 16,000 nurses in nearly 400 hospitals in California, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, four of the nation's largest states accounting for more than 20 percent of hospitalizations annually. The researchers examined the relationship between nurses' reports of quality and hospitals known for nursing excellence. Higher proportions of nurses working in hospitals with good practice environments and in Magnet-recognized hospitals (nationally noted for outstanding nursing care) reported that the quality of care in their workplace was excellent.

"Obtaining information from nurses takes advantage of their unique perspective within the caregiving context," said Dr. McHugh. "Nurses have insights -- patient-provider interactions, integration of technology, patient and family education -- that are not always documented in the medical record but often make the difference between good and bad outcomes."

Healthcare quality measures are integral to decision-making among regulators, consumers, and purchasers, with the potential to affect policy, quality improvement, efforts, and insurance. "Although the patient's perspective is the most relevant quality-of-care indicator," said Dr. McHugh, "nurse-reported quality-of-care is clearly a valuable indicator of hospital quality."

The study was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program and the National Institute of Nursing Research. Dr. McHugh is an RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar, and was one of only 12 nurse educators across the country selected last year to participate in the program and to receive a three-year $350,000 grant to conduct research.

Using Houzz to Build a Web Presence :: Building Moxie

It only took a few hours before I got the ping.? Coincidentally, it only took a few minutes too to set up my profile on Houzz.? But there it was, a new ping on my Google Alert ? the phrase ?Building Moxie.?

Build a Web Presence Using Houzz :: Google Alert Building Moxie on Houzz

As a blogger, I like this. It tells me pretty plainly that Houzz has a little bit of ?mojo? behind their links; they get indexed quickly.? For the out-linking alone, those few minutes were well worth the time.

Easy and helped along, I?ll mention their handy dandy Profile Completion Widget.? It tells me how I am doing in terms of my overall appearance on their site.

Profile Completion Tips and Profile View on Houzz

(Uggh! 45% and Okay, I know, I guess I could do better. ?Due time.)? Upload ?Portfolio? images. That?s 25% right there.? For me, truthfully ? it?s been several years and ? ha?well! You know, my house = something like a Perpetual State of During.? And . . . well ? moving on . . .

* If I really wanted to learn about ?Using Houzz to Market (My) Business? perhaps I?d join presenter Annie Nozawa @ 1PM EST on October 10th ? her free webinar.? I happen to be a little tied up that day (the Remodeling Show, sorry), but you, you know, could register as easily as clicking right here. Houzz, after all, is a great marketing tool for remodeling pros ? and it?s completely free.

*******

Something like 700K+ images, most hi-res and professional quality, have been uploaded to Houzz.? These images then become ?available? on the site. Most are uploaded by home professionals looking to build an aforementioned online portfolio.? For me, though, as a webgoer and further as a blogger, Houzz creates a single central source for inspiration.

Blogging with Houzz

Now, as a blog owner ? who accepts freelance submissions, I find that a lot of working web writers are at a loss (sometimes) when it comes to images.? Here?s a good example, and while of course it?s a very decent article, the images originally submitted by the writer were simply not up to snuff.? I chose instead, and wisely, to go with images from Houzz.? (I have also incorporated them in my own guest submissions elsewhere ? nice right?)

Houzz Embed a Photo Feature

I have gone so far as recently writing the following suggestion into some of our site guidelines.? ?If you are submitting to this site and can not rightfully gain access to images, we ask that you consider a source like Houzz.com from which you can provide embed code and source.?? The thing is ? they (Houzz) have this sweet little ?Embed? feature that allows you to use their images . . . with proper attribution, etc.? (And . . . Thank you!)

*******

If I take it still one step further, and let?s not forget ? it is not only this site?s ability to connect you with local professionals or help you mine inspiration or even allow you to collaborate with those professionals about your (newly-found)? inspiration, it?s the site?s ?ability? to allow you to collect and be creative with images.? At times, using Houzz can be like developing and/or telling a story.

For pros and further, to build a web presence, then, you can use your stories to link back to resources you already have in place on your own website(s).

Build a Web Presence with Houzz :: Houzz LogoIn practice, and on collecting my thoughts for my first ever ?editorial? ideabook, I identified ?closets? as a topic that we at Building Moxie had previously covered a good bit.? Yeah? I then immediately performed a variety of searches (on Houzz): ?Converted Closets?, ?Added Closets?, Small Closets? and I found literally thousands of images.? But as I began to gather images of closets (with a simple click of a button) into my ideabook, a strange thing began to happen.? I noticed very acutely that I was developing, guess what, an idea? a single idea ? a theme.

It occurred to me there, while working, that there may be a trend with closets that can be defined along the line(s) of old house/new house. Whereas it has been a theme for sometime for ?old house? owners, they tend to claim storage space from almost any corner they can find, in newer houses perhaps these homeowners may be taking (extra) closet space and converting into living space.? Anecdotal ? I know, but maybe you could take a look and let me know your thoughts.? Clicking on a caption will take you to the ideabook?s page on Houzz. (More motivated ? you could share my ideabook right there from side of the page.? *wink*)

For now, my profile rounds out with ideas for My Patio project (which has virtually gone nowhere) & My Cornice work that I do desperately need to complete.? Other ideas for ideabooks I might work, something in the line of doors or flooring, other popular topics on this blog. *shrugs* idk . . . Oh! And before I forget, here is my public profile link >> Building Moxie on Houzz.? Please come and check it out. Thanks and thanks all for reading.? ~jb

As a matter of passing, Best of Houzz for 2013 has launched, and Houzz provides tips for getting nominated by ?Requesting Reviews? right from your profile.? In the Brand category may I suggest writing a review for?American Standard Brands.? (Only if you are familiar.? And psst? You could win an iPad too in writing reviews.)

- For further reading, these fine nuggets came through just last week in my most recent copy of This Week on Houzz:
