Paul Krugman: Romney, the GOP and their disdain for workers

By now everyone knows how Mitt Romney, speaking to donors in Boca Raton, Fla., washed his hands of almost half the country -- the 47 percent who don't pay income taxes -- declaring, "My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." By now, also, many people are aware that the great bulk of the 47 percent are hardly moochers; most are working families who pay payroll taxes, and elderly or disabled Americans make up a majority of the rest.

But here's the question: Should we imagine that Romney and his party would think better of the 47 percent on learning that the great majority of them actually are or were hard workers, who very much have taken personal responsibility for their lives? And the answer is no.

For the fact is that the modern Republican Party just doesn't have much respect for people who work for other people, no matter how well they do their jobs. All the party's affection is reserved for "job creators," aka employers and investors. Leading figures in the party find it hard even to pretend to have any regard for ordinary working families -- who, it goes without saying, make up the vast majority of Americans.

Am I exaggerating? Consider the Twitter message sent out by Eric Cantor, the Republican House majority leader, on Labor Day -- a holiday that specifically celebrates America's workers. Here's what it said, in its entirety:

"Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success." Yes, on a day set aside to honor workers, all Cantor could bring himself to do was praise their bosses.

Lest you think that this was just a personal slip, consider Romney's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. What did he have to say about American workers? Actually, nothing: the words "worker" or "workers" never passed his lips. This was in strong contrast to President Barack Obama's convention speech a week later, which put a lot of emphasis on workers -- especially, of course, but not only, workers who benefited from the auto bailout.

And when Romney waxed rhapsodic about the opportunities America offered to immigrants, he declared that they came in pursuit of "freedom to build a business." What about those who came here not to found businesses, but simply to make an honest living? Not worth mentioning.

Needless to say, the GOP's disdain for workers goes deeper than rhetoric. It's deeply embedded in the party's policy priorities. Romney's remarks spoke to a widespread belief on the right that taxes on working Americans are, if anything, too low.

What really needs cutting, the right believes, are taxes on corporate profits, capital gains, dividends, and very high salaries -- that is, taxes that fall on investors and executives, not ordinary workers. This despite the fact that people who derive their income from investments, not wages -- people like, say, Willard Mitt Romney -- already pay remarkably little in taxes.

Where does this disdain for workers come from? Some of it, obviously, reflects the influence of money in politics: Big-money donors, like the ones Romney was speaking to when he went off on half the nation, don't live paycheck to paycheck. But it also reflects the extent to which the GOP has been taken over by an Ayn Rand-type vision of society, in which a handful of heroic businessmen are responsible for all economic good, while the rest of us are just along for the ride.

The point is that what people are now calling the Boca Moment wasn't some trivial gaffe. It was a window into the true attitudes of what has become a party of the wealthy, by the wealthy, and for the wealthy, a party that considers the rest of us unworthy of even a pretense of respect.

Coming To A Car Near You: Linux Goes Automotive, Signs Up ...

If, one day, we really are all going to be carted around in driverless cars from the likes of Google and others, then we may as well have some apps on board to keep us occupied. Today, the Linux Foundation announced that it was throwing its hat into the car-apps ring, with the creation of the Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup. Early sign-ups among car companies include?Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota. Tech companies include Harman, Intel, NEC, NVIDIA, Samsung, and Texas Instruments, along with Tizen, the Linux-based platform backed by Samsung and Intel.

The Linux Foundation is not exactly an early mover here. We?ve already seen ?car of the future? odes from the likes of?Ford?and Honda?? not to mention Google ? even some suggestions that Apple is working on concepts, too. The point with the Linux news, it seems, is to try to keep it relevant in that wider picture of development, and to try impart some standards in the process.

Members of the group will work together on Linux-based standards for devices and subsequent services to run on them, with some early emphasis on apps for in-vehicle infotainment and ?instrumentation cluster? (the technical term for all the different gauges you use to monitor speed, distance, water levels and more; car diagnostics).

?Carmakers can use Linux and open source technologies to accelerate innovation,? the group notes it in its release, pointing out that some $10 billion has already been invested in the platform to date.

Interestingly, Tizen, the Linux-based OS spearheaded by Samsung and Intel about a year ago, is also making an appearance here. Tizen will be working with this new automotive workgroup to create a bridge for apps to work across the two. Samsung had been planning to launch a Tizen phone this year, but this has apparently now been pushed back to some time in 2013. It?s interesting to wonder whether relationships like this one will help push the Tizen agenda at a company still making the bulk of its smartphone revenues from Android ? or whether this is actually a sign that Samsung is still sticking by Tizen after all.

The Linux Foundation says that it will also be opening the door for further collaboration ?among the?Linux kernel community, other open source software communities and the automotive industry.? It also notes that it is already supporting other efforts like the?GENIVI Alliance and the W3C workshop on Web and Automotive.

As with mobile devices, achieving scale for automotive projects is an essential part of keeping costs down and making solutions usable as widely as possible.??A community distribution for automotive Linux is essential,? said Ken-ichi Murata, project GM, Toyota Motor Corporation, in a statement. ?There are a core set of requirements specific to the automotive industry, and collaborative development can help meet those needs faster and more efficiently.?

A gloomy profit warning knocked a billion dollars off the market value of Burberry last week; the house's chief creative officer Christopher Bailey must have put a lot of that back on today with a glimmering, path-breaking metallic show in Hyde Park in London.

Inspired by pre-World War I company archive images of capes and corsets, the show was a gutsy statement that thumbed the nose at the market, a savvy reminder that when it comes to meshing technology and fashion no brand competes with Burberry.

Just as we sat down on our front-row benches, editors received personal emails from Bailey, with links to a live feed, one of them a mini virtual show in Burberry's mammoth new Regent Street store, where the sales staff all come armed with iPads, the better to show clients any look at its best - on catwalk, look book or ad campaign.

"Fashion shows have become major events; thanks to the Internet we have a global life audience of millions. So we have to provide entertainment," said Bailey backstage after the show, staged Monday, Sept. 17.

He certainly did that with mini capes in orange see-through plastic or silver leather, mini capes cut for a super-heroine and Eisenhower jackets made as mini balloons and shorn of sleeves.

It all felt a good deal more radical that Bailey's usually hyper edited shows, but the bravura cutting added glory to the meat and bones of this collection, which included the best coats we are going to see on any runway this season, anywhere. From rouched double sheen satin trenches to posh militarist double-breasted town-coats, where the panels, darts and sheer sleekness of the silhouette were truly great.

Plus, you could see the front-row antennas practically twitching when Bailey wowed with a trio of peacock feather cocktail dresses in forest green or Yves Klein blue that were pretty jaw-droopingly good. Panache, power, pride they had it all, moreover, they looked fantastic on the web.

Talk about a home run show, a clutch hitter moment for Bailey when the market is weak, but the creativity has never been stronger.

Occupy Wall Street marks anniversary, dozens arrested

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York police on Monday arrested dozens of Occupy Wall Street activists who gathered in the city's financial district, where they sought to disrupt traffic and surround the New York Stock Exchange as part of a day of protests to mark the movement's first anniversary.

The protests attracted about a thousand activists, far fewer than last fall's numbers, highlighting the challenge the movement has faced in trying to sustain momentum after sparking a national conversation about economic inequality last fall.

The New York Police Department, which set up a broad perimeter to block access to the NYSE by anyone other than exchange workers, said it has made "multiple arrests" by midmorning. Police were also posted at major banks and government buildings, and guarded Wall Street' landmark Charging Bull, a 7,100 pound bronze sculpture.

Gideon Orion Oliver, a lawyer who represents a number of protesters and the president of the New York Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, estimated in a Twitter posting that about 90 protesters had been arrested. Among those was retired Episcopal Bishop George Packard, who also was arrested last December.

Occupy Wall Street protesters, who popularized the phrase "We are the 99 percent," gathered early Monday near Zuccotti Park, where a spontaneous encampment became their unofficial headquarters last year, but were again barred access by police.

Several protesters held signs, one saying "END the FED," another reading: "We Are Students, Not Customers."

"What happened here a year ago was a process that cannot be stopped," Pulitzer-prize winning author Chris Hedges said. "What happened here a year ago will ultimately spell the doom of the corporate state."

The grassroots movement caught the world by surprise last fall with a spontaneous encampment in lower Manhattan that soon spread to cities across North America and Europe.

Occupy Wall Street briefly buoyed a spirit of U.S. social activism, and drew attention to economic injustice.

The group sponsored a series of activities over the weekend, attended by crowds that never exceeded the hundreds. New York police arrested about three dozen people at those events.

Even though it comes before a scheduled vote on Sunday for city teachers to approve what officials are calling the ?framework,? the planned rally and march in Chicago on Saturday also highlights the difficulty that US school reformers still face in holding down costs while pushing individual responsibility onto teachers for how their students perform ? a main sticking point behind a strike that left 350,000 Chicago students at home for a week. Only 1 in 5 Chicago 8th graders tested as proficient in math and reading in 2011, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, a slight improvement from a decade ago.

After marathon negotiating sessions this week, the teachers union won concessions from the city on pay increases as well as the percentage that teacher evaluations will focus on student test scores. Mayor Rahm Emanuel called it an ?honest and principled compromise.?

The city wanted 40 percent of each teacher evaluation to be tied to their students? test scores, but the agreed-upon number, according to published reports, is likely to be more in the 30-percent range. For their part, teachers worried that the sudden use of test scores as part of the evaluations would unfairly punish some teachers.

The pressure on politicians to rein in the unions is high, even in Democrat-controlled Chicago, where the strike exposed a rift among Democrats about how to rein in school costs while dramatically improving the city?s low test scores and high dropout rate.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The persistent problem of rogue Afghan soldiers and police turning their guns on U.S. and allied troops is a "very serious threat" to the war effort, which is predicated on placing security responsibility in Afghan hands, the U.S. military's top officer said Sunday.

In unusually blunt remarks to the Pentagon's own news service, the American Forces Press Service, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said the Afghan government needs to take the problem as seriously as do U.S. commanders and officials.

"We're all seized with (the) problem," Dempsey was quoted as saying. "You can't whitewash it. We can't convince ourselves that we just have to work harder to get through it. Something has to change."

Dempsey and other U.S. officials have remarked extensively in recent weeks on the need to improve the screening of Afghan recruits and to take other precautionary measures in the face of a series of attacks that so far this year have killed at least 51 allied troops, mostly of them Americans.

"But we've got to make sure our Afghan counterparts are as seized about it as we are," Dempsey said. "We have to get on top of this. It is a very serious threat to the campaign."

Dempsey commented after attending a meeting in Romania of NATO military representatives. He said they discussed the situation in Afghanistan, including plans for the remaining two years of the campaign and the insider attack problem.

In the latest instances of such attacks, two British soldiers were killed by an Afghan policeman in the southern province of Helmand on Saturday and four American troops were killed in a similar attack Sunday in Zabul province.

Dempsey said an assault on Camp Bastion, a British air base in Helmand province, on Friday in which two U.S. Marines were killed and six U.S. Harrier fighter jets were destroyed, should not be categorized as an insider attack even though the attackers were wearing U.S. Army uniforms.

He said an initial review of the matter had determined that the attackers had no inside assistance at Bastion. Other officials said the attack was clearly a well-planned, well-rehearsed assault carried out by Taliban fighters.

It was not immediately clear how the attackers got the U.S. uniforms or how they managed to do such extensive damage at Bastion

Experts fault captain, crew, Costa for Italy wreck

ROME (AP) ? Court-appointed experts have pointed the finger of blame primarily at the captain of a cruise ship that ran aground off Italy, but also faulted the crew and ship owner for a series of blunders, delays and security breaches that contributed to the disaster and the deaths of 32 people.

The Costa Concordia ran aground and capsized Jan. 13 off the Tuscan island of Giglio after Capt. Francesco Schettino took it off course in a stunt. He is accused of causing the shipwreck, manslaughter and abandoning the ship before all passengers were evacuated.

Eight other people are also under investigation, and the court in Grosseto ordered the expert investigation to help it determine which if any should be put on trial. A hearing is scheduled for next month.

In a 270-page analysis, the experts said a series of problems hobbled the response to Schettino's maneuver and contributed to the botched evacuation: crew members bungled directions, didn't understand orders and weren't trained or certified in security and emergency drills.

And they said ship owner Costa Crociere delayed alerting coastal authorities about the emergency ? a charge Costa denied Thursday.

In a statement, Costa said by law it was Schettino who was supposed to have alerted authorities about the accident, and that the captain assured the Costa crew on land that he had done so. And regardless, Costa said, Schettino's reports to Costa's headquarters were so delayed, partial and confused that the company couldn't discern how serious the emergency was.

And Costa firmly rejected the experts' claims that the crew was unprepared for emergencies, saying the "alleged defects in the certifications of some of the crew" didn't affect the evacuation.

Passengers described a confused and delayed evacuation, with many of the lifeboats unable to be lowered after the boat listed to one side. Some of the 4,200 aboard jumped into the Mediterranean and swam to the island, while others had to be plucked from the vessel by rescue helicopters hours after the collision.

Some passengers said they were shocked to see Schettino already ashore when they were being evacuated. Schettino claims he helped direct the evacuation from the island after leaving the ship.

Work has begun to remove the tons of rocky reef embedded into the Concordia's hull, a first step in plans to eventually tow the wreck away from the island.

The whole removal process is expected to take as long as a year.

More than 18 months in the making, the report identified six major areas of waste: unnecessary services ($210 billion annually); inefficient delivery of care ($130 billion); excess administrative costs ($190 billion); inflated prices ($105 billion); prevention failures ($55 billion), and fraud ($75 billion). Adjusting for some overlap among the categories, the panel settled on an estimate of $750 billion.

Examples of wasteful care include most repeat colonoscopies within 10 years of a first such test, early imaging for most back pain, and brain scans for patients who fainted but didn't have seizures.

The report makes ten recommendations, including payment reforms to reward quality results instead of reimbursing for each procedure, improving coordination among different kinds of service providers, leveraging technology to reinforce sound clinical decisions and educating patients to become more savvy consumers.

The report's main message for government is to accelerate payment reforms, said panel chair Dr. Mark Smith, president of the California HealthCare Foundation, a research group. For employers, it's to move beyond cost shifts to workers and start demanding accountability from hospitals and major medical groups. For doctors, it means getting beyond the bubble of solo practice and collaborating with peers and other clinicians.

"It's a huge hill to climb, and we're not going to get out of this overnight," said Smith. "The good news is that the very common notion that quality will suffer if less money is spent is simply not true. That should reassure people that the conversation about controlling costs is not necessarily about reducing quality."

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Now that addiction and intervention have become mere fodder for basic-cable reality shows, you might think there's nothing new to say on the subject. But in his powerful new film "Keep the Lights On," director Ira Sachs (who co-wrote with Mauricio Zacharias) takes us on a brutal and unflinching journey through a relationship that is irrevocably shaken by drugs.

The film begins in 1998, with filmmaker Erik (Thure Lindhart) scoping out a gay hook-up phone line in search of some anonymous companionship. He winds up meeting Paul (Zachary Booth), whose blandly handsome appearance and respectable white-collar job as a lawyer at a publishing house hide some secrets.

On their first meeting, after they've had sex, Paul mentions that he has a girlfriend and probably won't see Erik again. When they get together a second time, Paul smokes crack. The two eventually become a couple, but addiction is an ever-present specter; even when Paul isn't messed up, he's emotionally immature. It's clear that neither Paul nor Erik knows the basic rules of communication and arguing that keep any couple afloat, and Paul's habit of disappearing on benders for days at a time doesn't make matters any better.

Time passes, and Erik wins awards for the documentary he's been working on for years, but Paul keeps backsliding, entering rehab and then relapsing. What makes "Keep the Lights On" more interesting than your average addiction story is the subtle suggestion, as the relationship continues, that Erik's dependence on Paul and his messes is just as debilitating as Paul's taste for drugs. In one unforgettably disturbing scene, Erik sits in a hotel bedroom, while Paul smokes crack and has sex with a hustler, in the hopes that Paul will come home once this encounter is over.

The film has a late '60s/early '70s feel (from the occasional sun flares on the camera lens to the strikingly pale presence of Lindhart, who looks like the love child of New Wave Euro-stars Oskar Werner and David Hemmings), particularly in its casually unflinching portrayals of sexuality and drug use. Sachs doesn't underline and italicize those moments that some viewers might find shocking; to the contrary, he nestles them onto a soft bed of sad, minor-key music by the late great Arthur Russell.

Lindhart's performance feels like a revelation: The Danish actor has a long list of credits on both sides of the Atlantic (his U.S. films include "Into the Wild" and "Angels & Demons"), but his work here draws us in, even after the audience has had a chance to be repelled by the situations and even the characters.

The film never makes Erik the innocent victim of Paul's problems, and Lindhart's turn keeps us glued to the screen despite our temptation to look away.

"Keep the Lights On" is a movie that assumes that its audience is mature enough to handle not only intense situations but also subtle storytelling; so much of what we learn about the characters themselves, and about their relationships, is revealed in tiny moments and semi-audible asides.

This is the kind of intelligent and powerful drama that's a harbinger for the autumn movie season, and it raises the bar for the other grown-up movies soon to follow in its wake.
